Glasses Q & A
Do I need glasses?
Your vision can change over time, making it difficult to see clearly. You may have trouble seeing things that are close up, or you may struggle to see things in the distance.
If you need glasses, you may also experience:
- Headaches
- Eye strain
- Blurry vision
- Frequent squinting
You may also notice you have to sit closer to the television or farther away from your computer screen to see properly.
Any of these signs can indicate you need prescription glasses.
Why do I need glasses?
There are several reasons you may need prescription eyeglasses. A comprehensive eye exam can confirm the need for glasses and determine the correct prescription strength.
Common conditions that glasses can improve include:
Myopia
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, causes you to see well up close, but objects in the distance appear blurry. When the eyeball is too long, light focuses in front of the retina instead of on it.
Hyperopia
Hyperopia, or farsightedness, occurs when the eyeball is shorter than normal. Objects up close appear blurred, while distance vision is usually normal. This can result in frequent eye strain when reading or using a computer.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism occurs when the cornea has an irregular shape. Normal corneas are round, but with astigmatism, the cornea is more oval-shaped, causing light to focus on multiple areas of the retina. This results in blurry vision both near and far.
Presbyopia
Presbyopia is an age-related condition, typically affecting people over 40. As the lens of the eye stiffens with age, it becomes difficult to focus on close-up objects.
What happens during an eyeglass exam?
A comprehensive eye exam includes multiple visual acuity tests to determine the correct prescription strength for your vision needs.
During the exam, advanced technology is used to evaluate eye health. A series of tests with different lenses helps identify the optimal prescription for clear vision.
At Michigan Eye and Contact Lens, a variety of fashionable eyeglass frames are available. The staff can help you select frames and lenses from an extensive selection of brands and styles.
